Thread: Get your creation in the game!

Get your creation in the game!

Untold Stories of the Secret World (MOD) now allows user-created lore to be placed in the game world. Lore can be fan fiction, art, music, video, or anything else that can be displayed in the in-game browser. When a player that has the MOD installed is near a designated location, a red "US" icon will appear in the notification area. Clicking the icon will open the lore.

With this thread, I am soliciting lore entries from the TSW community. There are a lot of talented folks in our community, and plenty of content to draw from. This is a way to highlight that work to more people as they travel around The Secret World. It is a little much for one person to gather, so I would appreciate your help.

I have taken the liberty to seed Kingsmouth with entries from last year's fan fiction contest. I have also added some player art to Kingsmouth and The Savage Coast. I will accept additional submissions for those area, and I am looking for all types of content (fiction, art, music, video, whatever) for all areas of the game.

Adding new lore does NOT require the player to download a new version of the MOD. Once I post the lore, it is available immediately to all players running the current version. If you would like to submit a lore entry, please reply in this thread with the following info:
    • Title: The title of the piece (displayed in the browser title bar)
    • Author: The author/artist of the piece ( also displayed in the browser title bar)
    • URL: A link to the lore. I can only link to content. I cannot provide hosting, but plenty of options are available. Linking to fan fiction in a forum post or Google Docs is fine.
    • Location: Describe the location and/or NPC where you would like the lore to be placed. Coordinates would be nice, but aren't mandatory. TIP: Open Untold Stories from the main menu and scroll to the bottom to see your current coordinates.
    • Teaser: A teaser message can be displayed at the top of the screen the same time the US icon appears. This is optional. Some teaser examples are here and here.

Easy peasy. Just a few common sense rules/tips:
    • Install the MOD! Once your entry is posted, you'll want to see how it looks in the game. We also want you to discover lore others have submitted.
    • The in-game browser is nice, but it doesn't support everything (e.g. Flash). Please make sure your entry can be viewed in-game before submitting.
    • The content needs to relate to locations or NPCs in the game. For example, a sketch of a player's character doesn't work, because we have no context for placing the lore in the game world. However, a story featuring that same character interacting with NPCs and locales in the world is perfect.
    • Multiple entries for one location/NPC is fine, but there is a limited number the MOD can support. If I get too many (say more than 4-5), I will have to take on the role of curator and choose from the entries.
    • Placing lore within dungeons/instances is fine, but please provide the playfield ID and coordinates. I may not be able to get to the location myself.
    • For images, I would prefer a direct link to the image or a simple web page hosting it, as opposed to a page with a bunch of links. We want to highlight the artwork, not the surrounding noise.
    • YouTube videos work fine, albeit at a low resolution. It looks best if the video supports embedding, but this is limited on some videos due to copyright claims.

Besides the above rules, I will accept just about anything. I look forward to your submissions. Thanks!

I added my favorite artwork from this thread to Kingsmouth and The Savage Coast. There is still plenty of room for submissions.

I didn't get the overwhelming response I was hoping for , so I am opening this thread to lore submissions throughout the entire game world (no longer just Solomon Island). I look forward to any and all submissions. Thanks!

Hey there - was just alerted by a cabal mate that my work was popping up on their screen. I was kind of taken aback as no permission had been sought to publish it anywhere outside the competition for which it had been submitted. I'm fine with it being featured, but as a semi-professional author I would have vastly preferred to be asked first as I'm trying to make a living here and generally don't just give my rights away. Maybe shoot the other competition entrants a quick mail here to let them know how their work is being used so it doesn't come as a total surprise.

Hi, Aerinn. I am VERY respectful of an author's/artist's work, and I take that seriously. I would never republish or reuse an author's work without express permission. The reason I didn't take a permission-first approach to these stories is that I am literally linking to the public URL where they were originally posted. Technically, it is no different than a forum post saying "Check out this cool story" with a link to the story. I don't consider that publishing, just linking, which as far as I can tell, is done freely on the internet without permission. I hope that explains my point of view. That said, I'm not trying to argue the point. If anyone feels that the context is different here or that I'm in a grey area, I should take the links down. Now that you know the technicalities of what I'm doing, I'd appreciate your take on this issue as an author. Thanks.

Hey, Folks! I'm still looking for more lore and missions to add to the game. Untold Stories now has close to 300 downloads and is growing everyday. I just released a new version today. Got something awesome you want to share with others in the game? Submit it here, and I'll post it for everyone to see. Wanna try your hand at writing a mission? Salon has created a Mission Editor that makes it simple.

Here is some content that has been added in the last couple of months:

    • New mission "The Shadow Out of Time" by Tremerion.
    • Added more player artwork lore to all playfields.
    • Added FunCom Concept Art lore to London, New York, and Seoul.
    • New mission "Akma's Hand" now available (requires 2.3 or higher).

    Thanks!
